The Chicago Bears are making sure they don’t lose their recently acquired All-Pro guard to free agency next offseason. The Bears and guard Joe Thuney have agreed to a two-year contract extension, according to his agent Mike McCartney
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports the deal is worth $17.5 million per year, and Thuney will make $51 million for the next three years with $33.5 million full guaranteed at signing.
The move effectively keeps the Bears’ new interior trio of Thuney, center Drew Dalman, and guard Jonah Jackson together for the next couple of seasons.
Thuney was acquired from the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a 2026 fourth-round pick one week before free agency opened. The 32-year-old guard has become one of the best players at his position, winning four Super Bowls while with the Chiefs and the New England Patriots. Thuney has been named to the Pro Bowl three times during his career and was named First-Team All-Pro twice, both coming in the last two years.
General manager Ryan Poles hasn’t been shy about his desire to sign Thuney to an extension and it finally came to fruition. It also ensures Thuney isn’t just a one-year rental, and the Bears can comfortably count on him to be their starting left guard for the foreseeable future, which should be music to quarterback Caleb Williams’ ears.
This is the fourth contract extension for Poles this offseason. He also signed cornerback Kyler Gordon, linebacker T.J. Edwards and guard Jonah Jackson to multi-year extensions.
