One soldier was killed in an encounter between security forces and terrorists in the Singhpora area of Chatroo in Chenab Valley’s Kishtwar district.
The gunfight broke out on Thursday morning after security forces received specific inputs about the presence of terrorists in the area.
“Following the inputs, security forces laid a cordon around the area and launched an operation to flush out the hiding terrorists,” said an official.
According to the official, as personnel from the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and CRPF closed in on a suspected spot, the terrorists opened fire on them.
“The forces retaliated, triggering a fierce encounter. In the initial exchange of fire, one soldier sustained injuries,” the official added.
The soldier later succumbed to his injuries.
“During the ongoing operation, fierce gunfight is continuing. One of our #Bravehearts sustained grievous injuries in the exchange of fire and has succumbed despite best medical efforts. Operation is in progress” Army’s 16 Corps posted on X.
The operation was still underway at the time of going to press, with additional reinforcements deployed and a tight cordon maintained to prevent the escape of any militants.
Sources said that two to three terrorists, belonging to the Jaish-e-Mohammad terror outfit are believed to be trapped.

Following the abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, militancy re-emerged in the Jammu region with the twin districts of Rajouri and Poonch in the Pir Panjal range witnessing a sharp spike in militant activities.
In 2024, the insurgency further spread to the Chenab Valley and the plains of Jammu.
