Where does the Jacksonville Jaguars’ offense rank heading into the upcoming 2025 NFL season?
Pro Football Network recently put together their rankings with offseason programs now behind us, and coming in at No. 18 are the Jaguars.
Taken into account when putting this list together were yards per play, points per drive, red zone efficiency, and more.
“The excuses are gone,” wrote PFN. “Travis Hunter is being inserted as an offensive weapon, and Liam Coen was brought in to maximize the potential of the Jacksonville Jaguars offense. Under Trevor Lawrence, the Jags have Offense+ finishes of 26th, eighth, 14th, and 18th (last season), production that doesn’t match the hype he entered the league with.”
Every move made this offseason on the offensive side of the football for the Jaguars came with one thing in mind: maximizing the window ahead that the team has with Trevor Lawrence.
This began when the Jaguars hired Liam Coen to be the head coach. In one season as the offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Coen helped produce one of the most productive offenses in the NFL.
Coming from the Sean McVay coaching tree, Coen brings a system to Jacksonville that is built on multiplicity. This is accomplished by running a variety of plays from just a few personnel packages. Another element is the like-plays, or play concepts that build off of each other throughout the course of a game.
All of this allows for an offense to throw a variety of looks at opposing defenses, which can keep a defense guessing and help to create mismatches for the quarterback to exploit.
“I really like it,” Lawrence said of Coen’s offense. “It has a lot of answers. It’s great. It puts a lot on the players, you have to know your stuff, but it gives you all the answers.”
Along with the schematic changes, GM James Gladstone has prioritized reshaping the offensive line unit with six new additions between free agency and the NFL draft.
For any offense, consistency starts up front with the offensive line providing a run game to lean on to keep the offense out of predictable passing situations, and time in the pocket for the quarterback to go through his reads.
We also saw Gladstone add a lot more speed and playmaking potential to this unit by signing Dyamni Brown and drafting Travis Hunter and Bhayshul Tuten.
“You don’t feel like you’re stuck in a play that’s not set up for success,” Lawrence added. “We change the presentation a lot. We make a lot of things look the same. Without going into too much detail, there’s a lot of things I like about it.”
Lawrence absolutely has the ability to lift everyone around him, but this new-look Jaguars offense will hopefully take some of that playmaking burden off his shoulders so that he doesn’t have to be Superman on every play, with the scheme and personnel additions helping with some of that heavy lifting.
The recipe for a successful Jaguars’ offense certainly exists, and this is a team that very much seems to be on the right path. The next step is seeing that take place on the football field.
