Mangaluru: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged secret burials in Dharmasthala carried out a fresh round of excavation at Gonkratar, about 2 km from the temple town, on Friday.
The site, located on the right side of the Dharmasthala-Kukke Subrahmanya Road amid dense forest, was identified by the whistleblower earlier in the afternoon. The SIT team immediately launched a search operation, which continued until around 6 pm. However, according to sources, no human remains were recovered at the site.
The SIT was constituted by the state government following a July 3 complaint from the whistleblower- a former sanitation worker who alleged that several bodies had been secretly buried in Dharmasthala village. Based on the complaint, the SIT conducted a spot inspection and identified 13 locations for excavation.
The search operation began on July 29, and human remains were reportedly found at two locations—spot number 6 and below a tree near spot number 11. These remains have been sent for forensic examination.
So far, 12 of the 13 identified sites have been excavated. The 13th location—situated by the roadside near the bathing ghat—is yet to be dug. It is believed that Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology may be used for further investigation at the remaining site.
