The Karnataka government has announced a power tariff hike, adding a surcharge of 36 paise per unit of electricity from April 1, 2025.
The increase comes after the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) permitted energy supply companies (ESCOMs) to recover the government’s share of pension and gratuity (P&G) contributions from consumers.
“The tariff hike will come into effect from April 1, 2025, in force for the entire duration of the control period, commencing from FY 2025-26 and concluding in FY 2027-28, or as decided by the government from time to time,” the KERC stated.
In December 2024, the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) had proposed a 67 paise per unit tariff hike for FY 2025-26 in its first multi-year tariff (MYT) application filed before KERC.
Mounting burden on citizens
The latest decision follows a series of price hikes in Karnataka. In January 2025, the government increased bus and metro fares, followed by hikes in waste collection charges. Plans are also in place to raise water tariffs by 1 paise per litre, while Nandini milk prices are expected to increase soon.
BJP’s State President B Y Vijayendra criticised the Congress-led government, calling it a “pickpocket government” that offers free schemes while simultaneously increasing tariffs.
