In a first for an Indian Institute of Management, IIM Ahmedabad is set to establish an international campus in Dubai. The IIM announced on Wednesday that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the institute’s director, Bharat Bhasker, and Helal Saeed Almarri, Director-General of Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism, to set up a branch campus at the Dubai International Academic City.
Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the signing of the MoU to establish IIM Ahmedabad’s international campus “is a proud moment for India’s higher education”. He added, “This marks a significant milestone towards globalisation of world-class Indian education institutions as envisioned in the NEP (National Education Policy 2020). This collaboration will open new vistas for learning, innovation, and empowering future leaders for global good. IIM Ahmedabad’s presence in Dubai will drive prosperity and economic development in the region and further strengthen India-UAE relations in the years to come.”
The announcement comes in the wake of the India visit of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE.
IIM Ahmedabad Director Bharat Bhasker had said at the institute’s convocation ceremony in March that the campus in Dubai would be launched in September.
IIMA’s website says that the institute will offer a one-year MBA in Dubai.
With a thrust on “internationalisation”, the NEP 2020 states, “High performing Indian universities will be encouraged to set up campuses in other countries, and similarly, selected universities e.g., those from among the top 100 universities in the world will be facilitated to operate in India.”
IIT Delhi has an international campus in Abu Dhabi, which was inaugurated last year.
