Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge Sunday accused the Union government of attempting to finish off the Congress by foisting the National Herald case against its senior leaders Sonia and Rahul Gandhi.

At the party’s ‘Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan’ rally in Bihar’s Buxar, Kharge defended the Gandhi family as patriots and targeted the Sangh over its role in the freedom struggle.

“Have you heard of anyone from the RSS or BJP sacrificing their life for the country? In fact, (Nathuram) Godse pumped bullets in Mahatma Gandhi’s body. The RSS was a British agent… Jiske ghar me ek kutta bhi nahi mara, tum desh ki swabhiman ki baat karte ho (not even a dog died in their house, and they are now talking about national pride),” he said.

Kharge dismissed the BJP’s allegations that properties of National Herald were transferred to the Gandhis. He said Jawaharlal Nehru had started National Herald, Navjivan and Qaumi Awaaz newspapers to awaken the people against British oppression.

“National Herald property can be neither sold nor transferred. The Narendra Modi government has been trying to finish off Congress by lodging the National Herald case against the Gandhi family. The BJP government is misusing agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate and the Central Bureau of Investigation,” Kharge said.

“But let people remember that the Gandhi family is not one to get cowed. This is the family of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi who sacrificed their lives for the country. Sonia and Rahul Gandhi cannot be bullied,” he said.

Kharge also targeted Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for his political about-turns, saying he has been “keeping the company of people out to destroy the country”. Kharge also asked him if Bihar got the special category status promised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 2015 Assembly election campaign. The state goes to polls this year.

Kharge also targeted the government for passing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. “There was no dispute over waqf. But the BJP is an expert in creating disputes where there are none. They want Hindus and Muslims to fight. It is a conspiracy by the RSS and the BJP,” said Kharge, alleging that the BJP has also failed Dalits and women.
