Leaders of the Opposition of both Houses of Parliament spoke to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Wednesday morning and discussed the terror attack in Pahalgam in which at least 26 people were killed on Tuesday.

The deadly terrorist attack on tourists has brought together the otherwise bickering ruling and Opposition political class in not just condemning the strike, but demanding strong action from the government.

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha who is currently in the US, said he spoke to Shah, adding that “the families of victims deserve justice and our fullest support.”

Mallikarjun Kharge, LoP in Rajya Sabha, demanded an appropriate response to the attack. Taking to X, he stated, “The perpetrators of this heinous terror attack must not go unpunished. The innocent victims must get justice.” He added, “Late last night, spoke with Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, along with senior Congress leaders of J&K Congress about the despicable carnage in Pahalgam.”

“Unity in action, in the wake of adversity is the need of the hour. This cross-border terror attack should be responded with adequate and resolute reply,” said Kharge. He said the Centre must talk to all political parties “to ensure security in Jammu and Kashmir and make every possible effort to ensure the safety of tourists in the state”.

The conversation between the LoPs and the top leadership came ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s key meeting with the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) on Wednesday. Modi also held a meeting with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday morning upon his arrival from Saudi Arabia.
