Michael Wright is no stranger to campaigning under the Green Party.

The April 28 federal election marks the second time he has run on the party’s behalf in the Regina–Lewvan district. It’s also the sixth time overall he has campaigned for an elected position in the Regina area after four previous bids at the provincial level.
Wright challenged Regina–Lewvan incumbent Warren Steinley of the Conservative Party in the 2021 federal election. Although he came in fifth with 1.2 per cent of the vote, Wright has relaunched his campaign this spring to represent Green voters in the region.

One thing Wright has heard from the public is a “desire to have the Green Party on the ballot even if it isn’t their first choice,” he said in an email to the Regina Leader-Post, adding that “more people than usual are talking about voting strategically.”
In this federal election, he noted that voters are “talking about (U.S. President Donald) Trump and the tariffs, and they are angry.”
If elected, he would “demand that Canada invest in Regina to protect us from Trump and his tariffs. We would build housing in Regina,” Wright said, adding that he’d also “change the voting system to proportional representation” so the election better reflects the popular vote.
Wright first ran as a candidate for Moose Jaw North in the 2003 provincial election. That was under the New Green Alliance, which later became the Green Party of Saskatchewan.
Wright again represented the party in the 2011 and 2020 provincial elections. He was a candidate in the Regina Lakeview riding and came in third both times with 2.79 and 5.06 per cent of the vote, respectively. He also sought a provincial seat in Regina Pasqua for the 2016 election, coming in fourth (2.09%).
“I have my ear to the community and I will always speak up for us,” said Wright, who grew up in Regina and works as a teacher.
Also running in Regina–Lewvan is: Steinley, Mac Hird (Liberal Party), Ray Aldinger (NDP) and Godwin Ezizor (People’s Party of Canada).
