The Meitein outfit, Arambai Tenggol (AT), has called off its 10-day total shutdown with immediate effect on Tuesday, reportedly considering the hardship faced by the public owing to the outfit’s agitation. However, the outfit said it will continue pursuing its demand for the release of the outfit’s leader, who was arrested by the CBI.
Closing on the heels of the development, the state government also partially relaxed the prohibition order imposed in the valley districts following widespread protests over the arrest of the AT leader, Asem Kanan Singh.
As per an official order, movement of persons outside their residence is permitted from 5am to 5pm, while the prohibition will be enforced from 5pm to 5am. Government agencies engaged in law enforcement-emergency services, essential services and banking institutes are exempted from the purview of the prohibition.
Robin Mangang, the self-styled PRO of Arambai Tengol, told the reporters that the outfit decided to call off its agitation taking into consideration various factors. Mangang said, “We imposed the shutdown in protest against the arrest of Asem Kanan Singh. But the agitation was not going as planned. Some vested interest people are taking advantage and trying to tarnish the image of the outfit. Moreover, the outfit also acknowledged the negative impact, like soaring prices of goods, harassment of the commuters, among others.”
Nevertheless, the PRO said the outfit will continue to pursue its demand for the release of the outfit’s leader, using democratic means.
Mangang claimed that Arambai Tenggol is a socio-cultural organisation with the sole objective to protect and preserve the cultural and religious identities of the indigenous people of the state. Unfortunately, the AT was forced to take up arms to defend the homeland from the onslaught of illegal “Kuki Terrorists”, he said.
