The buzz word in Andhra Pradesh is now yoga, as the State government is on a mission to introduce the ancient practice to at least 2 crore out of 5.3 crore population in the State.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead a first of its kind feat in Visakhapatnam on June 21, International Yoga Day, to set a Guinness World record of 5 lakh people performing yoga simultaneously on a 26 km-stretch in the port city.

The concept of Yogandhra Pradesh is a new add-on to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s vision for Swarnandhra Pradesh to achieve social and economic development.

A mammoth exercise,  part of an initiative launched for Yoga Month from May 21 to June 21, the project is currently underway to ensure smooth grounding and has to be monitored by all district collectors, as per the directions of Chief Secretary K Vijayanand.

According to M Krishna Babu, Special Chief Secretary, Medical and Health Department and the Nodal Officer for Yogandhra 2025, an exclusive registration portal participants is live now and has already crossed the targets expected. According to officials, while the target for trainer registration has surpassed four times, the participants’ registration is nearing 1.5 crore much ahead of the upcoming Yoga Day.

Those who participate for three days in the programme will be given yoga certificates. The government is expecting to issue about 20 lakh participation certificates. The trainers too can register themselves to provide their services.

How will the lessons be imparted to such a massive crowd? “There will be an instructor for each 1,000 participants and podiums will be set up for the purpose on the entire stretch,’‘ said Krishna Babu.

It will be a big day for Visakhapatnam as the beach road from Ramakrishna Beach to Bheemli, a 26 km stretch, will see a sea of people. The Ministry of Ayush is chipping in by providing 5 lakh yoga T-shirts and mats for the participants.

Yoga is one of the Shad Darshanas or six philosophies of Ancient India developed during the Later Vedic period between 1000 BC and 500 BC.

Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras is the standard text for the practices which are seen as a path to the physical and spiritual wellbeing of an individual.
