Andhra Pradesh Government is in the process of acquiring an additional 4,000 acres of land from the farmers in Amaravati new capital project region. “In view of the plans in the pipeline, the present extent of land will not be adequate and the process will commence soon for acquisition of about 4,000 acres of land,’‘ a senior official told businessline.

After the N Chandrababu Naidu – led NDA Government came to power last year and the commencement of the construction  of the new capital including finalisation of tenders, there has been greater interest by various firms and institutions for having their presence in Amaravati region, the official said.

In addition, the State Government has already started the process for construction of a Greenfield International airport in Amaravati and is conducting feasibility studies. The airport alone would require about 4,000 acres of land.  Andhra Pradesh Airport Development Corporation has already called for tenders for the a feasibility study for the purpose.

Land-pooling method

As per the original plan of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Government which started the Greenfield new capital project during 2014-19, 37,941 acres were to be acquired through the land-pooling method. Out of this, 34,689 acres were acquired by 2019 when the TDP lost the elections in 2019.

Further acquisition of the land was halted by YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSRCP Government during 2018-24 which announced the shift of executive capital for Visakhapatnam which, however, did not happen.

“The original commitments given to farmers including allotment of development plots in the capital region are now being fulfilled as CRDA has already commenced the return of plots to those farmers who had given land in pooling. This has generated fresh interest among the farmers to offer land to Government for capital,’‘ the official said.

The Phase II acquisition of the land is expected to be finalised after the formal resuming of construction works by the builders who won the bids recently. The State Government is planning to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ceremonial launch capital construction works again this month.
