A junior commissioned officer (JCO) was killed as the Indian Army foiled an infiltration bid from across the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Keri Battalion area near Akhnoor during the early hours of Saturday.
In a post on X, the Army’s 16 Corps identified the deceased as Kuldeep Chand. “He laid down his life while gallantly leading a #CounterInfiltration operation… We stand in solidarity with the bereaved family in this hour of grief,” it said.
Official sources confirmed that an infiltration bid was foiled, saying that the JCO, as per initial reports, was “critically injured”.

The infiltration bid came only two days after India and Pakistan had a brigade commander-level flag meeting at Chakkan Da Bagh meeting point along the LoC in Poonch Thursday and discussed measures to maintain the sanctity of the LoC and maintain peace between the two sides.
This was the second meeting between the two sides this year. They last met in the same place on February 21 and agreed to maintain a ceasefire agreement reached between the two sides on February 25, 2021.
However, the Pakistani Army violated the ceasefire by resorting to unprovoked firing after a mine explosion along the LoC in the Krishna Ghati sector of Poonch district on April 1. The Indian troops responded effectively in a “controlled and calibrated manner”, and the “situation is under control and being closely monitored”, the Army’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) had said.
Prior to it, an Indian Army soldier was injured in firing along the LoC in the sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s border Rajouri district on March 12. Sources said the injured soldier was deployed at a forward post in the Kalsiyan area of Nowshera. The same morning, an explosion also occurred along the LoC, but no casualties were reported, sources added.
Since the beginning of this year, there have been several cross-border infiltration attempts. On February 11, two Indian soldiers, including Captain Karamjit Singh Bakshi, were killed in an explosion of an improvised explosive device (IED), reportedly planted by militants along the LoC in the Akhnoor sector. Days before that, there had been incidents of sniping of Indian soldiers from across the LoC in Rajouri and Poonch districts.

Two more militants were killed Saturday morning in the Chatroo area of the Kishtwar district in Jammu and Kashmir as security forces and police continued their operation for the fourth consecutive day.
With this, the number of militants killed has risen to three as one militant was shot dead Friday in the dense forests covered under the blanket of two to three feet of snow.
“In the ongoing operations at #Chhatru, Kishtwar, despite bad and inclement weather, two more Pakistani terrorists have been eliminated,” the Army said in a social media post on X.
“A large quantity of war like stores including One AK and One M4 rifle have been recovered. Operations are in progress,” it added.

Though the identity of the slain militants is yet to be ascertained, sources said they are likely to be foreigners who were involved in a series of attacks on security forces and civilians last year.
In November last, militants in the Chatroo area killed a JCO and two village defence guards. Since then, the security forces and the police have been on the hunt for the militants.
