Guwahati: Tension prevailed along the India-Bangladesh international border in the Thakurbari area of Mankachar on Tuesday morning following an alleged confrontation between the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Bangladesh Border Guards (BGB) after the repatriation of 14 Bangladeshi nationals.
Informing that civilians also joined the BGB opposing the repatriation, security sources said that the BSF was forced to fire four warning shots into the air to disperse a swelling crowd and de-escalate the situation.
Security sources said that tension escalated during a repatriation operation in which Indian authorities were attempting to push back 14 Bangladeshi nationals who had entered Indian territory illegally.
Pointing out that the Bangladesh Border Guards intervened near the international border’s zero line, obstructing the handover, security sources said that the BGB personnel not only confronted the Indian BSF in a heated verbal exchange but also crossed into the zero line area—an internationally sensitive zone meant to remain neutral.
The situation deteriorated further as hundreds of Bangladeshi civilians converged at the zero line in support of the BGB’s intervention.
Indicating that in order to control the escalating tension, the BSF troops resorted to aerial firing, security sources said that the situation was defused.
The BSF in a statement however said that In a significant operation on the morning of May 27 the Border Security Force successfully thwarted an infiltration attempt by a large group of Bangladeshi nationals from the India-Bangladesh border in South Salmara Mankachar district in Assam.
The BSF statement said, “In early hours of 27th May 2025, vigilant BSF troops deployed at Indo-Bangladesh International Border in district South Salmara Mankachar, Assam observed suspicious movement of Bangladesh nationals approaching towards International Boundary from the Bangladesh side with intention to cross into Indian territory. Acting swiftly, BSF troops challenged them to prevent their unauthorized entry into Indian territory. The Bangladeshi mob subsequently retreated back into Bangladesh.”
The BSF asserted, “This incident underscores the BSF’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding India’s borders. The Force continues to maintain a high level of alertness and
professionalism in addressing emerging challenges along the border. The BSF remains dedicated to its mission of securing the Nation’s borders while upholding humanitarian principles and international cooperation.”
