Sounding poll bugle in West Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the people of the State desperately want “freedom” from the politics of violence, appeasement and corruption of the Trinamool Congress government and that they have to decide on opting for “BJP’s development model”.
Hitting back at Modi, Chief Minister and Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee challenged the BJP to face the elections immediately in the State.
“Bengal is plagued by many problems. First, widespread violence and anarchy in the State. Second, mothers and sisters are facing insecurities and heinous crimes. Third, huge unemployment. Fourth, major corruption of the ruling Trinamool Congress. As a result of these, people’s faith in the administration is diminishing,” Modi said at a public rally in North Bengal’s Alipurduar.
He labelled Murshidabad communal violence as ‘cruelty’ of the Mamata Banerjee government. “Whatever happened in Murshidabad and Malda is an example of the government’s cruelty. I want to ask the people of Bengal whether a government can function like that? This government is totally indifferent to the violence against the common people. Here courts had to intervene several times on different matters,” he said.
Protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act spiralled into major communal violence on April 11-12 in the Muslim-dominated Murshidabad district, where three people were killed and several others injured.
The Prime Minister also repeated his charge of corruption against the ruling Trinamool Congress. “The TMC regime is not ready to accept its mistakes in the school jobs scam, it is blaming courts and the judicial system. Corruption destroyed families and lives of teachers in Bengal,” said Modi on the school service commission’s alleged irregularities.
Open challenge
Responding sharply to the remarks made by the Prime Minister at the Alipurduar rally, Mamata Banerjee issued an open challenge to him and the BJP.
“I challenge them, if they have guts, go into elections tomorrow. We are ready, and Bengal is ready to accept your challenge,” the Chief Minister said.
