The Cabinet on Tuesday approved the National Sports Policy 2025, which focuses on developing the country as a strong contender for excellence in the international sporting events including the 2036 Olympic Games. The policy focuses on development of the sporting ecosystem for economic and social development while aligning it with the National Education Policy 2020.

The new policy, centred around key pillars,  will replace the existing framework of National Sports Policy, 2001, with an objective to make India among the top five sporting nations by 2047.

New vision

To promote sporting excellence at the global stage, the policy outlines a vision of strengthening sports programs from the grassroots to elite levels, establishment of competitive leagues and competitions to develop sports infrastructure, having world-class systems for coaching while enhancing governance of National Sports Federations, among other measures.

Recognising the role sports can play in economic development, the policy has outlined various measures including positioning India as a global sports tourism hub by hosting major international events, strengthening sports manufacturing ecosystem besides promoting start-ups and entrepreneurship in this sector.

“Encouraging private sector participation through Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and innovative funding initiatives” is also among the measures.

Viable career option

The policy also emphasises the role of sports in driving social inclusion by promoting participation among women, economically weaker sections, tribal communities, and persons with disabilities through focused programs besides revitalising and promoting indigenous and traditional games. It also envisions positioning sports as a viable career option by integrating it into education.

To make sports a national movement, the policy aims to drive mass participation and a culture of fitness through nationwide campaigns and community-based events besides launching fitness indices for schools, colleges and workplace.

The NSP 2025 lays down a comprehensive implementation strategy through a strategic framework, which states that a robust national regulatory framework including laws should be established for efficient sports governance and leveraging of emerging technologies.

“Creation of a national framework with well-defined benchmarks, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and time-bound targets” is also part of the strategic framework.

“The NSP 2025 will serve as a model for States and Union Territories, encouraging them to revise or formulate their own policies in alignment with national objectives. The policy calls for integration of sports promotion into the activities, schemes, and programs of all Ministries and Departments to achieve a holistic impact,” an official statement added.
