The Centre has sanctioned Tamil Nadu a project for evacuation of approximately 4,000 MW renewable energy capacity. The project includes construction of 624 circuit km (ckm) of transmission lines and 2200 MVA substation capacity. This is under the Green Energy Corridor (GEC) Phase-II. The total estimated project cost is ₹720 crore, with Central Financial Assistance (CFA) of 33 per cent of the project cost.
Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation Limited (TANTRANSCO) is the implementing agency for the project and has divided the project into 9 package, Shripad Yess Naik, Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy and Power, told the Lok Sabha on Wednesday to a question by Tamil Nadu Member of Parliament S Jagathratchakan.
Tamil Nadu is well connected with National Grid through high capacity transmission corridors comprising 765 kV & 400 kV lines as well as +800kV HVDC System, which facilitates smooth transfer of power through Inter State Transmission System (ISTS) network between Tamil Nadu and other States/Region. Power transfer capacities are being strengthened on a continual basis to address changed power transfer scenarios as and when required , with reliability & security, the minister said.
As on June 30, the total installed renewable energy capacity (including grid connected) in Tamil Nadu was 25749.12 MW comprising small hydro power (123.05 mw); wind power (11,830.37 mw); bio-power (1,046.62 mw); solar power (10,570.88 mw and large hydro (2,178.2 mw), the minister said.
