A civilian was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district late Saturday night, the police said, days after 26 people were killed by terrorists in Pahalgam.
The victim, identified as Ghulam Rasool Magray, was at his home in Kani Khas when assailants entered the residence and opened fire, according to police officials. Magray sustained critical injuries to his abdomen and wrist.
After the shooting, Magray was rushed to District Hospital Handwara for initial treatment and later transferred to Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital in Srinagar. He succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, officials said.
Magray was 44 years old, police added. An investigation into the killing has been opened, though no group has claimed responsibility.
The incident comes as Kashmir remains on high alert following a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam. In response, security forces have launched a sweeping crackdown across the valley, detaining and questioning thousands of individuals suspected of allegedly having militant sympathies.
Officials said that more than 2,000 people have been detained across Kashmir in the past four days as part of the intensified security operations.
