Karnataka’s Chief Minister has filed a formal complaint against Meta over faulty translation services, particularly on Facebook and Instagram, citing concerns about misleading official communications.
The Minister’s media advisor, writing on behalf of the CM, highlighted in an official communication that automated translation of content on social media platforms has been “grossly misleading” in several instances. This poses significant risks, as many users may rely on these faulty translations rather than accessing the original message.
The advisor has urged Meta to either suspend these translation features or collaborate with qualified Kannada language professionals to enhance the quality and contextual accuracy of translations between Kannada and English.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the Chief Minister expressed his concerns, stating, “Faulty auto-translation of Kannada content on Meta platforms is distorting facts & misleading users. This is especially dangerous when it comes to official communications. Social media platforms must act responsibly. I caution citizens to be aware that translations shown are often inaccurate. Such negligence by tech giants can harm public understanding & trust.”
The issue has gained prominence as politicians increasingly use social media platforms to communicate with constituents. However, the accuracy of automated translations has come under scrutiny, particularly when official government communications are involved.
