The rescue teams working on tracing the remaining seven persons trapped under the debris in the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel have intensified the debris removal with the induction of autonomous hydraulic-powered sludge removal robot towards the last 50 metres of the end rock.
According to officials heading the rescue operation, the rescue teams have cleared debris till the last 50 meters from the tunnel end and the metal (iron and steel) parts of the tunnel boring machine (TBM) are being cut into pieces by the technicians from South Central Railway (SCR) with the help of plasma and gas cutters on Thursday (March 13, 2025) – the 20th day from February 22 when a portion of the tunnel collapsed.
The cutting of iron from the top level and tier-two (middle level) was in progress and it would pave the way for clearing the slush further. The hydraulic robot would work with high efficiency in the areas where rescue personnel would find it difficult to reach and take up debris removal.
The officials expressed hope that cutting the lower level metal part of the TBM in the last 50 meters would help trace the seven persons trapped under the debris. Meanwhile, the metal parts being cut from the TBM were also being shifted out of the tunnel swiftly with the help of locomotive trolleys.
