As the BJP distanced itself from remarks made by its MPs on the judiciary, the Congress Sunday morning attacked the ruling party saying that its “damage control” holds “little meaning”.

The Congress’s statement follows BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s strong criticism of the Supreme Court, in which he blamed Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna for “all civil wars in the country”. Follwing this, party president J P Nadda Saturday night said the BJP “completely rejected” these remarks and warned against such statements.

Congress MP and general secretary in charge for communication Jairam Ramesh said Sunday “the distancing of the outgoing BJP President from the atrocious remarks made by two BJP MPs on the Chief Justice of India carries little meaning”.

“These MPs are repeat offenders when it comes to hate speech and are very often used by G2 to attack communities, institutions, and individuals. The outgoing BJP President’s clarification is nothing but damage control. It will fool nobody. This is Entire Political Science reflecting itself as Entire Political Hypocrisy,” said Ramesh in a post on X.

Ramesh also made an oblique reference to recent remarks on the judiciary by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and said, “But the outgoing BJP President is totally silent on equally unacceptable remarks on the judiciary that are continually made by one of its very distinguished appointees to a high Constitutional position. What does he have to say about these remarks? Does the BJP subscribe to them?”

Targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ramesh said, “If the continued silence of the Prime Minister on these repeated attacks on the Indian Constitution is not tacitly supportive of them, why has no action been taken against these two MPs? Has Nadda ji issued show causes notices to these two MPs?”

On Saturday, BJP MP from Jharkhand Nishikant Dubey said while responding to a question on the Waqf law and the recent violence in West Bengal, “Iss desh mein jitne grih yuddha ho rahe hain unke zimmedar kewal yahaan ke Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna Sahab hain (CJI Sanjiv Khanna is responsible for all civil wars in this country).”

Speaking on similar lines, BJP Rajya Sabha member from Uttar Pradesh Dinesh Sharma had said, “There is an apprehension among the public that when Dr B R Ambedkar wrote the Constitution, the rights of the Legislative and judiciary were clearly written… According to the Constitution of India, no one can direct the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha and the President has already given her assent to it. No one can challenge the President, as the President is supreme…”

The recent questioning of the judiciary started after Dhankhar Thursday said Article 142 of the Constitution, which grants the Supreme Court the power to pass any order necessary to ensure “complete justice” in any case pending before it, “has become a nuclear missile against democratic forces, available to the judiciary 24X7”.

“So, we have judges who will legislate, who will perform executive functions, who will act as super Parliament and absolutely have no accountability because the law of the land does not apply to them,” Dhankhar had said.

The statement had drawn sharp reactions from the Congress and other Opposition parties, with Rajya Sabha member Kapil Sibal saying Friday that he has never seen any Rajya Sabha Chairman make “political statements” of this nature and that it “looks as if the judiciary is being taught a lesson”.
