TIRUPATI: Chittoor II Town police have cracked the April 13 honour killing of a 25-year-old woman for marrying outside her faith. The case came to light after the mother of the victim Yasmeen Banu lodged a complaint with the police.
According to police, Yasmeen, a resident of Balaji Nagar in Chittoor, married Talla Sai Teja, a 27-year-old Dalit man from Potukanuma village in Puthalapattu mandal, on February 9 in Nellore. The two had been classmates in college, with their relationship lasting several years.
Yasmeen’s family, particularly her father S. Shaukat Ali (56) and brother Sheik Mohammed Basha (29), had strongly opposed her interfaith marriage.
Following their marriage, Yasmeen and Teja approached Tirupati Rural police on February 13 seeking protection. Thereafter, police counselled Yasmeen’s parents and the couple began living together.
Chittoor II Town circle inspector D. Nettikantayya said that on April 13, Yasmeen had been lured under the pretext of her father’s ill health. “Teja dropped her near the PCR Circle in Chittoor around noon, where her brother Mohammed Basha and a minor accompanying him picked her up. Basha and the minor took her to a secluded area near Balaji Hatcheries at Mupparajupalle Cross and strangled her with a nylon rope. Basha left her body in the verandah of her father’s residence before fleeing”, the CI said.
On April 14, Yasmeen’s sister informed Teja that Yasmeen had died by suicide and that her body has been taken to the Chittoor Government Hospital. While her family claimed it had been a suicide, Teja alleged foul play. Based on a complaint, police registered a case and launched an investigation.
Chittoor SP V.N. Manikanta Chandolu formed a special team under the supervision of CI Nettikantayya to investigate. While the investigation had been underway, Basha and his father Shaukat surrendered before the Chittoor Urban MRO office on Tuesday. They have been remanded to judicial custody after their confession.
The minor involved in the case is absconding.
