New Delhi:Foreign secretary Vikram Misri on Tuesday briefed three of the seven multi-party delegations on Operation Sindoor over Pakistan’s role in terror strikes in India and the country’s strong resolve to punish the perpetrators as well as their masterminds ahead of their visits abroad, according to news agency reports. The other four delegations are expected to be briefed later in the week before their departure overseas.
As multi-party delegations prepare to leave for foreign capitals to convey India’s strong stand against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, Misri briefed the delegations headed by JD(U)’s Sanjay Jha, Shiv Sena’s Shrikant Shinde and DMK’s Kanimozhi. The MPs and other members of the three delegations were appraised that Indian action after the Pahalgam terror attack was targeted against terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and not against military installations and civilians.
According to news agencies that cited sources, the foreign secretary said that it was only after Pakistan’s attempts to attack Indian military installations and the civilian population that India hit back at the Pakistani airbases (in the early hours of May 10 as part of Operation Sindoor).
“Our message to world leaders will be that enough is enough and that Pakistan has acted like a thief asked to probe his own crime whenever India has in the past trusted its words on acting against terrorism,” Jha was quoted by news agencies as saying. The JD(U) is heading a delegation to Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia and Indonesia. His delegation will proceed on the visit abroad from Thursday.
Shinde, who is leading a delegation to the UAE and African countries Liberia, Congo and Sierra Leone, reportedly said the delegations will highlight Pakistan’s links to terror incidents in India. The delegation led by the Shiv Sena leader will proceed abroad on Wednesday.
The delegation led by Kanimozhi will visit European nations Spain, Greece, Slovenia, Baltic nation Latvia and India’s time-tested friend Russia and will proceed abroad on Thursday.
After the briefing by the foreign secretary, BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi, who is part of the delegation headed by Jha, said the seven all-party delegations will visit countries, including some that will soon become (non-permanent) members of the UN Security Council (UNSC) and some that are already members of the UNSC.
Sarangi added that it is expected that Pakistan, currently being a non-permanent member of the UNSC, will try to float an anti-India narrative at the UNSC for the remainder of its (two-year) tenure and that therefore it is necessary for India to counter this narrative and speak the truth about the global need for zero tolerance towards terrorism.
After the briefing by the foreign secretary, Congress leader and former external affairs minister Salman Khurshid told the media, “There was no interference by anyone (in the understanding reached between India and Pakistan). There was no mediation. But when such things happen in the world, different people try to send a message. But whatever has happened has happened only between the two nations. When the matter escalated, it was between our two nations. When it ended, it ended between the two nations. It was initiated by the Pakistan DGMO…they (Pakistan) said that we should end this. We said that if you want to end it, then do so. It will be ended…”
When asked about the different viewpoint taken by the Congress leadership, Khurshid was quoted as saying, “Politics within the country is our right, our duty…it is different. But outside the country, what we have to say is different.”
The Union parliamentary affairs ministry had stated last week, “In the context of Operation Sindoor and India’s continued fight against cross-border terrorism, seven all-party delegations are set to visit key partner countries, including members of the UN Security Council, later this month.
The ministry said that the all-party delegations will project India’s national consensus and resolute approach to combating terrorism in all forms and manifestations. They will carry forth to the world the country’s strong message of zero tolerance against terrorism. Members of Parliament from different parties, prominent political personalities and distinguished diplomats will be part of each delegation.
