Four paramedical staff of Rangaraya Medical College suspended on charges of sexual harassment

Four paramedical staff of Rangaraya Medical College (RMC), Kakinada, have been suspended by the college management on Friday (July 11) on charges of sexual harassment of 55 B.Sc (MLT) students based on the findings of the internal inquiry committee. 

Speaking to The Hindu, RMC Principal and Additional Director of Medical Education A. Vishnu Vardhan said: “On July 11, four para-medical staff have been suspended based on the internal inquiry committee report. The suspended staff are lab attendant V. Kalyan Chakravarthi and lab technician S. Gopala Krishna of the Biochemistry Department, lab technician B. Jimmy Raju of the Microbiology Department and lab technician K.V.V.S. Prasada Rao of the Pathology Department.”

“On July 9, we received an anonymous e-mail stating that some girls had been sexually harassed by the paramedical staff on the campus and the internal inquiry committee investigated immediately investigated the matter,” Dr. Vishnu Vardhan said. 

55 victims

“As many as 55 B.Sc. students of MLT branch have stated before the inquiry committee that they had been sexually harassed by the four paramedical staff. The incidents occurred at least a month ago,” the College Principal said. On July 10, Dr. Vishnu Vardhan lodged a complaint with the Kakinada City police. 

Speaking to The Hindu, Kakinada Superintendent of Police G. Bindu Madhav said: “We have arrested three accused and another accused, V. Kalyan Chakravarthi, is yet to be arrested in the sexual harassment case. Investigation is on..” Meanwhile, the victims also are set to lodge individual complaints with the police against the accused.
