Xu Feihong, China’s Ambassador to India
At a time when US has cranked up heat on India by slapping additional tariffs, China’s Ambassador to India Xu Feihong has backed India calling the US a “bully”. With the imposition of an additional tariff of 25 per cent, the total levy on India has increased to 50 per cent.
“Give the bully an inch, he will take a mile,” the Chinese Ambassador to India stated on X without naming the US President Trump. The remark is being seen by some observers as him expressing solidarity with countries like India and Brazil. He also shared an excerpt of talks between China’s foreign minister Wang Yi and Brazil President Lula’s chief advisor Celso Amorim that stated, “Using tariffs as a weapon to suppress other countries violates the UN Charter, undermines WTO rules and is both unpopular and unsustainable.”
This remark comes at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to atted the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit. Calling it the largest SCO meet since the grouping’s inception, a Chinese spokesperson said that the summit “will be a gathering of solidarity, friendship and fruitful results.”
Meanwhile, an editorial by Global Times stated that some Western media outlets have interpretation of Modi’s China visit as an attempt to “hedge against” the US is a rather one-sided view. “Defending free trade and countering unilateral tariffs is the shared will of most countries in the world today. From the perspective of China, China-India cooperation is not aimed at any third party. As two ancient civilizations with long-standing friendly exchanges, two major emerging economies, and key members of the Global South, both countries are at critical stages of their respective modernisation journeys,” the Global Times stated.
