The Department of Geology and Mines has made fitting of GPS equipment mandatory for all vehicles transporting minerals from quarries, crushers and stocking yards in Tamil Nadu starting from July 31.
All quarry operators, traders and truck operators from southern districts of Tamil Nadu were instructed by Joint Director of Geology and Mining in Madurai, L. Sattanathan, at a meeting held in Virudhunagar on Tuesday (July 1, 2025).
A statement said that Mr. Sattanathan recalled that it was announced in the State Assembly about making GPS equipment mandatory for all vehicles transporting minerals. This was reiterated to the operators of quarries, trucks and crushers from the districts of Madurai, Virudhunagar, Theni, Dindigul, Thoothukudi, Sivaganga, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Kanniyakumari and Ramanathapuram.
Similarly, they were instructed to compulsorily instal weighing bridges on their premises.
Assistant Director of Geology and Mining, C. Sugatharahima, and officials from other districts were also present.
