New England Patriots legend Julian Edelman revealed a personal interaction with Drake Maye that stood out during his visit with the team in the offseason.

The second-year quarterback approached Edelman with some questions about the offense, which has some similarities to past offenses Edelman has played in under offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Immediately, the former standout wide receiver was impressed with Maye’s thirst for knowledge and willingness to learn more.

“Drake Maye, the question he asked me, the hunger that he had,” Edelman said, when asked what impressed him the most about the Patriots on The Herd with Colin Cowherd. “I went in and talked to the team and afterwards, Drake came by, and they’re running the same offense that we were in, and he kinda asked me, ‘Hey, what do you see on this?’

“It was a smart question. That stood out to me, that he didn’t have an intimidation factor of being embarrassed to go out and ask a guy a question that’s been in the system that he’s gonna try to go be in. I thought that was big.”

The Patriots are hopeful for a massive second-year leap from Maye, who finished with 2,276 passing yards, three touchdowns and 10 interceptions last season. There have been serious efforts made to revamp the offensive line, particularly with the team drafting offensive tackle Will Campbell and guard Jared Wilson, along with signing free agent Morgan Moses.

The Patriots also upgraded at receiver with the additions of Stefon Diggs, Mack Hollins and rookie Kyle Williams.

It will be an entirely new offense with McDaniels running the show this time around. The expectations will be greater than ever before for Maye, but he has given every indication that he’s ready to face those challenges head-on.
