Karnataka: Shakti Scheme Crosses 500 Crore Bus Rides by Women

Bengaluru: The free bus travel for women in State run buses under ‘Shakti’ scheme on Monday touched 500 crore rides by women under the scheme and the transport department officials termed it “a historical record in public transport.” The total ticket value of women travellers under the scheme has amounted to Rs 12,669 crore so far.

The scheme was launched by the ruling Congress government in Karnataka on June 11, 2023 and women across the State travel for free in buses run by Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC), Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) and Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC).

Drawing a comparison between before and after the launch of the ‘Shakthi’ scheme, transport officials stated around 85.84 lakh women passengers were travelling in buses on a regular basis and the numbers have gone up to 1.17 crore a day and said the ‘Shakti’ scheme has had a massive impact on women travelers.

The scheduled services under the scheme increased from 21, 164 prior to the ‘Shakti’ scheme and to the present 23, 635 services currently. The total number of buses increased from 23, 948 to 26, 130 including the replacement of 2,828 old vehicles.

To mark the occasion, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Minister of Transport Ramalinga Reddy symbolically presented 500th ride ticket to a woman passenger, gifted her a shawl and a memento while 30 women passengers including students, senior citizens and transgender individuals were felicitated with Ilkal sarees, sweets and roses.

On the occasion, as a mark of gratitude over ‘Shakthi’ scheme, a group of women from Odala Dhwani Stree Sangha in Vijayapura district presented to the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Minister of Transport Ramalinga Reddy with organic jowar rotis and holige they had prepared.

The group of women have achieved success in their business to sell organic rotis and holiges travelling from Vijayapura district to Bengaluru city, about 500-km away and attributed their success story to the State Government launched ‘Shakti’ scheme.
