In a move to intensify the crackdown on unauthorised constructions, Nellore Municipal Corporation (NMC) is taking several steps to put a check on road encroachments, illegal buildings and structures in the city.

NMC Commissioner Y.O. Nandan on Thursday asked the officials to clear the road margins encroached by shops in the vicinity of A. C. Subba Reddy Vegetable Market near Madras Bus Stand.

He asked the officials to monitor the market regularly and prevent the re-establishment of shops by vendors on the roadside, causing traffic disruptions. Apart from encroachments, the NMC is also cracking the whip on illegal constructions.

Acting on the Commissioner’s orders, the Town Planning Department officials on Wednesday demolished three buildings in Venkataramapuram and James Garden areas that had additional floors built in violation of the regulations.

“Notices have already been served and demolition orders handed over to the owners for the removal of unauthorised structures that were constructed in violation of building permits. The building owners announced that they would remove the illegal structures themselves and sought time for it. However, they did not remove the illegal structures within the stipulated time. Hence, the process of removing the extra-storey structures was initiated by the Town Planning Department,” Mr. Nandan told The Hindu.

Earlier, the Commissioner instructed the Planning Department officials and Ward Secretariat Planning Secretaries to identify the buildings that have been constructed without building permits at the pillar stage and remove the structures.

Last week, three under-construction apartments were identified without permits in Haranathapuram Extension area. He asked the building owners to stop the construction works immediately. Charge-sheets were filed against the owners of three other buildings being constructed beyond permits.

The Commissioner ordered to identify the buildings used for commercial purposes without obtaining occupancy certificates, and issue notices. He directed the officials to remove the unauthorised flex signboards, including advertisements and other campaigns on the roadside.
