Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas is heading into the biggest summer of his basketball career as he will be a restricted free-agent for the first time since entering the NBA. With Thomas being a restricted free-agent, Brooklyn has an easier chance of re-signing him. In the meantime, Thomas is standing up for himself on social media against some of the criticism sent his way.
In a post on X by Brooklyn Netcast, the author made a point that Thomas has to improve as a defender and/or a playmaker if he was going to be someone that the Nets can build around. Thomas, who has continued to make strides in his game over the past two seasons, responded with laughing and clown emojis along with a GIF of Dwyane “The Rock” Johnson during his professional wrestling days.
While social media is a place where anyone and everyone can express their opinions about any subject they want to, Thomas made a point to respond to this specific criticism, most likely because he has heard those same talking points throughout his career. Thomas, 23, heads into free-agency at an interesting time for him because while he had the best statistical season of his career, that performance occurred during an injury-plagued campaign.
Thomas averaged 24.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 43.8% from the field and 34.9% from the three-point line as he was clearly the primary scoring option from the beginning of the year. While many of his numbers were career-highs, he was only able to take the floor for 25 games as he continued to deal with a troublesome left hamstring that left him unable to play more than three games in a row before re-aggravating the injury.
When Thomas spoke on the recurring injury during his exit interview, he maintained that the injury was more the result of a “freak” occurrence as opposed to whether he was training in a way that was detrimental to his durability. Thomas is most likely right about that given he hadn’t dealt with any long-term injuries like that prior to the 2024-25 season, but either way, Thomas decided to have some fun while addressing one of his critics.
