An edge defender that was largely unproductive in college falls down to Commanders at 29 in new mock draft.
“First Things First” host Nick Wright presented his 2.0 mock draft this week; how did Wright’s mock draft play out for the Washington Commanders at No. 29?
With the most noticeable need for the Commanders being an edge rusher, which edge rushers did Wright select in the first round, before the Commanders’ choice at 29?
Well, of course, Abdul Carter (Penn State) was never going to be available for the Commanders, so he went third overall to the division rival, the New York Giants.
The next edge to go was Georgia’s Jalon Walker, whom Wright had going to the Falcons at No. 15.
Though he has been twice accused of sexual assault, Marshall’s Mike Green was taken by Wright at No. 17 for the Cincinnati Bengals. Then, when the Los Angeles Chargers and Packers were to select at 22 and 23, Wright saw that these two teams both needed and selected edge rushers. The Chargers took Donovan Ezeiraku (Boston College), and the Packers followed with James Pearce Jr. (Tennessee).
At 28 for Detroit, is when Wright selected the next Edge. Wright took Georgia’s Mykel Williams. This means six edge rushers were selected before the Commanders came on the clock in Wright’s mock draft. Thus, at No. 29, Wright still managed to take an edge rusher for the Commanders when he selected Texas A&M DE Shemar Stewart.
Stewart tests off the charts, yet his lack of production during his college years has many confident that he will slip down the drafting board, Thursday. Wright appears to have adopted a reasonable approach to Stewart.
