In the aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam terror strike, security agencies have mounted an intense crackdown on terrorists, killing six terrorists in two clean operations across south Kashmir.
“Security agencies revised their strategy in response to last month’s terror activities with a renewed focus on intensified operations and coordination, resulting in the successful operations”, said V K Birdi, Inspector General of Police ( IGP) Kashmir.
He was addressing a press conference with General Officer Commanding, Victor Force, Major General Dhananjay Joshi, IG CRPF Mitesh Kumar at the headquarters of the Victor Force in south Kashmir’s Awantipora area.
Sharing details, Birdi said that six terrorists were neutralised in two encounters, occurring in the Keller and Tral areas. “These operations were successful due to the coordination among security and intelligence agencies”, said the IGP.
Six terrorists were killed — three in Shopian’s Kellar block and three in Nadar Tral area of Pulwama district — in two separate encounters within 48 hours.
Following the Pahalgam terror attack, the Valley witnessed a spike in encounters as security agencies intensified their operations against the terror network.
A total of six encounters has been reported since April 25 from different parts of Kashmir.
focused Encounters
“After the Pahalgam terror attack, we made several areas our focus to target them in a more focussed and effective manner ”, said GOC Joshi .
He said that they had received inputs that terrorists moved to higher reaches with the melting of snow.
“On the night of May 12 , we received inputs that a group of terrorists could be present in Katha Halan forest area of Shopian. Our domination party, already deployed there, relocated itself and zeroed in on the area ,” Joshi said.
On the morning of May 13, they observed suspicious movement and challenged the suspects, but the terrorists opened fire, triggering an encounter that led to their killing. “The operation was carried out in the higher reaches under challenging conditions,” Joshi said.
About the second encounter in Tral’s Naddar village , he said that it took place in a different terrain.
“The terrorists took their positions in different houses and fired on security forces. Our challenge was to evacuate civilians including children ,” said Joshi.
He said that they safely evacuated the civilians and then systematically carried out the searches and killed the terrorists. “Both the encounters took place in two different terrains”, said the GOC.
He said that the successful conduct of both operations demonstrated that security forces would track down and neutralise terrorists wherever they might be.
According to the officer, among the six terrorists killed, Shahid Kuttay, shot dead in Shopian, was identified as a key figure.
He was involved in several attacks including the killing of a sarpanch in Hirpora, Shopian on May 18 last year, and a shooting at the Danish Resort on April 8, which left two German tourists and a driver injured.
