Days after three children were found unconscious at their home and their mother was taken to a hospital in Hyderabad’s Ameenpur, the police claimed Wednesday the woman smothered them to death.
Paritosh Pankaj, Superintendent of Police, Sangareddy, told reporters they arrested the women Rajitha, 30, and her former classmate Suru Shivakumar, 30, who have been remanded in judicial custody, for the murder of the children.
The children, aged 12, 10 and 8, were taken to a hospital from Rajitha and Chennaiah’s Raghavendra Nagar residence in Ameenpur early March 28. The doctors at the hospital later declared them dead.
According to the police, Rajitha, who married Chennaiah, 50, in 2013, was not happy in the marriage, and had constant fights. Around six months ago, Rajitha came in contact with Shiva while planning a reunion of their Class 10 batch. The two developed a relationship, and decided to marry and start a life together.
The police said Shiva allegedly asked Rajitha to leave her children, and that she planned to kill her children to start a new life. She told Shiva about her decision at around 6 pm on March 27.
Pankaj said while Shiva supported the plan, “one by one, she suffocated her children to death”. “She used a towel to smother them one after the other,” the SP added.
When Chenniah, a water tanker driver, arrived home late at night, Rajitha complained about stomach pain. She also told him that the children lost consciousness after eating curd rice for supper. As she pretended to be in pain, Chennaiah and their neighbours took all four of them to a hospital, said the police.

The police said Rajitha’s claims fell flat following the postmortem examination, which ruled out food poisoning.
