HYDERABAD: The search for a second possible leopard lurking on the Icrisat campus in Hyderabad is continuing and until it is certain that no big cat is prowling on the campus, efforts to catch it will continue, forest department officials said on Wednesday.

It may be recalled that the presence of two possible leopards was reported on April 14 and one leopard — a young male aged between four and five years — was caught in a trap cage during the early hours of April 17 and was released in the Amrabad Tiger Reserve in Nagarkurnool district on the same evening.

With uncertainty continuing over the presence of a second leopard in Icrisat, a senior forest department official said since some images captured by a drone earlier showed two leopard-like animals, the 20 camera traps placed in various locations in Icrisat will remain there. “Two trap cages continue to be there to catch it if a leopard is still in the campus,” the official said.

“But only when a clear image is captured by the camera traps or in a drone visual, we can say with certainty that a second leopard is there. But until then, we are not taking any chances and Icrisat staff have been asked to continue to be vigilant and follow safety protocols,” the official said.
