Stock market live today: Qualcomm to acquire Alphawave IP Group for $2.4 billion to enhance AI and data center capabilities
Qualcomm Inc. announced a $2.4 billion cash acquisition of London-listed semiconductor company Alphawave IP Group Plc to bolster its AI and data center capabilities. The deal, offering 183 pence per share—a 96% premium over Alphawave’s March 31 closing price—aims to enhance Qualcomm’s high-speed connectivity and compute technologies, critical for AI-driven data centers. Alphawave’s expertise in SerDes, PCIe, and chiplet technologies complements Qualcomm’s Oryon CPU and Hexagon NPU, supporting its push into the data center market amid a slowing smartphone sector. The acquisition, unanimously backed by Alphawave’s board and supported by 50% of its shareholders, is expected to close in Q1 2026, pending regulatory and shareholder approval. Alphawave’s shares surged 23% to 183.60 pence, while Qualcomm’s rose 4%. The deal also includes Alphawave’s Israeli engineering hub, acquired via its 2022 purchase of Banias Labs, adding 90 engineers to Qualcomm’s workforce. No significant regulatory hurdles are anticipated, especially after Alphawave’s exit from its Chinese joint venture, WiseWave.

Stock market live today: SEBI investigates Jane Street for potential derivatives trading manipulation in India
Jane Street, a global high-frequency trading firm, is under investigation by India’s Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for its derivatives trading activities over the past three years, following its reported $2.34 billion revenue from India’s futures and options (F&O) market in 2024. The probe focuses on whether Jane Street’s algorithmic trading strategies involved a repeated pattern of taking large positions in index derivatives (particularly in the Nifty 50 and banking indexes) while simultaneously trading the underlying stocks in the spot (cash) market to profit from price movements, a practice that could distort market pricing and mislead investors.
This strategy, sometimes referred to as a “bait and switch,” allegedly involves inflating derivative prices to attract smaller investors before executing counter-trades in the spot market, potentially manipulating benchmark indexes. SEBI’s scrutiny was triggered by Jane Street’s outsized profits—nearly five times that of the next largest trading firm—complaints from other institutional firms, and concerns over rapid trade reversals at abnormal prices.
While the National Stock Exchange (NSE) closed a related probe in April 2025 after Jane Street’s trading partner, Nuvama Wealth Management, claimed the trades were algorithm-driven with no malicious intent, SEBI’s broader investigation continues. The regulator is also examining other foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) for similar patterns, suggesting possible coordinated or copycat strategies.
If SEBI finds evidence of intentional manipulation, Jane Street could face regulatory action, including fines or trading restrictions. However, Jane Street has not commented publicly on the probe, and no formal charges have been confirmed as of June 9, 2025. The investigation highlights broader concerns about high-frequency trading’s impact on India’s derivatives market, where 90% of retail traders incur losses, prompting SEBI to tighten rules, such as increasing contract sizes and margin requirements.
The outcome of this probe could lead to stricter regulations for algorithmic trading in India, balancing market innovation with protections for retail investors. For now, the investigation remains in a preliminary stage, with potential show-cause notices pending.
