Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Vijay Kumar Sinha on Friday said those who protest against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill would be treated as “traitors” and jailed. The Bill has been passed in both Houses of Parliament.

“Those who are threatening not to comply with the Waqf amendment will have to go to jail. This is not Pakistan, this is Hindustan. This is the Narendra Modi government,” Sinha said.

He added, “The Bill is duly passed in both Houses of Parliament. Those who still say they will not accept it are traitors. Such people should be immediately arrested.”

Meanwhile, JD(U) MLC Ghulam Gous, who had criticised the Bill on Thursday, said on Friday: “Jo qatil hai wahi munsheef hai, kisse nyay maange (The one who is the killer is also the judge, whom should we go to for justice)”. The JD(U) is the third-largest constituent of the BJP-led NDA, and has supported the Bill.

Gous also targeted the BJP and said, “If the BJP is really thinking of Muslims’ welfare, why is it not implementing recommendations of the Justice Rangnath Mishra Commission and the Justice R Sachchar Committee report?”

Another JD(U) leader and former MP, Ghulam Rasool Baliyawi, had also lodged his protest against the Bill, and a district leader from East Champaran, Mohammad Qasim Ansari, quit the party.

A senior Muslim leader of the JD(U) told The Indian Express on condition of anonymity, “I am not sure if Nitish Kumar is fully taken into confidence over the party’s support to the Bill. As per our knowledge, Nitish Kumar had wanted controversial parts of the Bill to be redressed before the party lent its support. But that did not happen.”
