The Energy Department of Tamil Nadu has planned an outlay of over ₹2,700 crore to upgrade its coal-based power plants and strengthen the transmission network through the development of new substations. Additionally, the Department is considering the establishment of a new 600 MW thermal power unit in Thoothukudi to enhance power generation capacity.

Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation Ltd (TANTRANSCO) will spearhead the development of 12 new substations — one at 400 kV and the remaining at 110 kV — with a total budget of ₹1,192 crore. These measures are part of the State’s broader push to ensure a stable and high-quality power supply.

For ongoing maintenance and upgrades, ₹500 crore has been earmarked for thermal power stations in Mettur, Thoothukudi, and North Chennai under Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Limited (TNPGCL). Additionally, TNPGCL’s Valuthur Gas Power Station – I will undergo improvements, including a hot gas path inspection of its 95 MW turbine and enhancements to its Dry Low Nitrogen Oxide (DLN) control system, under a ₹111 crore project, State Electricity Minister V Senthil Balaji informed the Assembly on Tuesday.

The Department will also invest ₹215 crore to establish 18 new 33/11 kV substations, along with ₹55 crore for upgrading transformer capacity at 26 existing 33/11 kV substations and another ₹55 crore to carry out similar upgrades at 25 existing 110 kV substations.

To bolster infrastructure in vulnerable coastal areas such as Cuddalore and Nagapattinam, ₹490 crore has been set aside for converting overhead power lines into underground cable networks. Similar undergrounding projects will be carried out at 10 key locations that host large-scale car festivals, enhancing both safety and reliability during such mass gatherings.
