Tripura’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party announced on Tuesday that it would observe “Constitution Murder Day” on June 25 to commemorate the 50th year of the Emergency, declared in 1975 by then prime minister Indira Gandhi.
As part of a countrywide observance, the saffron party will hold exhibitions, seminars, and discussions related to the Emergency on Wednesday.
“With the entire country, all the eight organisational district units of the party will observe ‘Constitution Murder Day’, or the 50th year of the Emergency, on Wednesday. The Sadar urban and rural districts will conduct the programme on June 28,” BJP chief spokesperson Subrata Chakraborty told reporters in Agartala.
Chakraborty elaborated that there would be exhibitions in the eight organisational districts and that three state-level speakers along with other party leaders would attend seminars and discussions, while the day would be observed in the Sadar Urban and Sadar Rural organisational districts on Saturday.
“The Sadar Urban district event will be held at Nazrul Kalakshetra (in Agartala) at 11 am on June 28,” said Chakraborty.
It was last year that the BJP-led central government designated June 25 as “Constitution Murder Day”.
