Of all the prominent quarterbacks in this year’s NFL draft, it seems the New Orleans Saints are least interested in Shedeur Sanders. Kellen Moore didn’t even bother to appear at his pro day. This doesn’t matter to Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski. He doesn’t think drafting a quarterback other than Sanders is wise for the Saints.
Sobleski used Tyler Shough to drive his point home, but the stance remains constant for Jaxson Dart and Jalen Milroe. Sobleski wrote, “the Saints should basically be in Sanders-or-bust territory, with Spencer Rattler serving as the alternative if the pick doesn’t happen.”
It’s safe to say Sobleski sees a significant drop off after Sanders and doubts there is a franchise quarterback beyond the top two passers. If Sanders gets picked before the Saints are on the board, Sobleski passing on remaining quarterbacks as the best move because the Saints “are not getting an immediate upgrade coupled with long-term potential.” Here’s more:
“Louisville’s Tyler Shough is the most obvious example of prospect viewed as talented option but wouldn’t serve the Saints purposes, as a soon-to-be 26-year-old rookie with an extensive injury history and one season as a full-time starter.”
Not everyone has the same injury history, but for Sobleski it’s about talent level. Instead of jumping to, what Sobleski believes to be, an inadequate quarterback, rolling with Rattler and waiting until next year is his preferred course of action. Giving Rattler a year may result in not needing to pursue a quarterback in 2026.
That decision is a year away. What Sobleski is attempting to avoid is what the Saints should be attempting to avoid, drafting a quarterback who isn’t truly a franchise quarterback out of desperation around the position. The Saints just likely view more players as franchise cornerstones than Sobleski.
