Jessica Pegula entered Wimbledon with lofty expectations. As the women’s No. 3, Pegula was expected to make a deep run at the event, not running into trouble until the later rounds.

Any hope for that push ended Tuesday, as Pegula shockingly lost in the first round of the tournament to Elisabetta Cocciaretto. Pegula lost in straight sets to the women’s No. 116 player (6-2, 6-3).

It was an uncharacteristically sloppy day for Pegula, who notched four double faults in the loss.

For all of Pegula’s success, Wimbledon remains her toughest Grand Slam event. Entering Tuesday, Pegula had just a 62 percent winning percentage at the tournament, her lowest among all Grand Slams. That number decreased following her first-round loss to Cocciaretto.
