It will be a fight to the death — well, only figuratively — as 12 fearless improvisers battle for comedy supremacy during Improv Windsor Theatre’s official launch inspired by The Hunger Games.
Windsor Improv Theatre is hosting the high-stakes competition April 26, with a theme based on the dystopian action film where 12 teenagers fight to the death until only one remains, to celebrate its recent non-profit status.

“It’s all a parody, so I don’t know what the legality is and stuff in Canada, but it’s kind of a Hunger Games parody,” said theatre president Eric Miinch of the upcoming show titled The Improv Games.
“Twelve improvisers are competing on stage and they’re being eliminated based on audience votes,” Miinch said.
“So it’s kind of a Hunger Games-themed battle royale — 12 people on stage and then one person will emerge the victor.”
No stranger to improv, Miinch worked for years in Toronto as an actor and trained in improvisation there and in New York City. In 2018, he moved back to Windsor and met his now friend Alex Monk.
The pair started producing shows together loosely under the Windsor Improv Theatre banner.
“This is like pre-COVID but obviously COVID shut everything down,” Miinch said. “So everything kind of went on hiatus for two and a half, three years there (and) even when things started opening up, it was still kind of touch and go.”
Eventually though, demand for corporate workshops and other events started taking off and Miinch and Monk decided “for tax purposes, we thought it would be smart to incorporate.”

They produce shows — mostly short form or improv games, with some based on the series Whose Line is it Anyways? — mainly out of Kordazone Theatre on Seminole Street and the Bank Theatre in Leamington.
With a mission to make improv accessible to everyone, from first-time performers to seasoned pros, and to uplift local talent and build an inclusive space for play and performance, Miinch is leading improvisation classes and an improv festival is being planned for July.
Miinch said The Improv Games will feature outrageous challenges, unpredictable alliances and side-splitting performances, with each performer fighting to survive elimination rounds while a flamboyant host guides the chaos with flair.
Audience participation is key, with attendees voting on who advances, who gets eliminated and who ultimately claims the title of Improv Victor.
There will also be a Hunger Games-themed costume contest with prizes.
