Wisconsin women’s basketball transfer center Carter McCray committed to West Virginia on Sunday.

McCray entered the portal last month after one season with the Badgers. She originally transferred in last offseason after one year at Northern Kentucky.

The 6-foot-1 center started 29 of 30 games for Wisconsin in 2024-25, finishing the year with per-game averages of 10.6 points, 7.1 rebounds and 0.8 assists while shooting 56.7% from the field. She finished second on the team in scoring and rebounding, behind only superstar forward Serah Williams (19.2 points, 9.8 rebounds), who has also since transferred out.

McCray now joins a West Virginia program that finished 25-8 in each of the last two seasons, campaigns that each ended in a second-round NCAA Tournament loss. The Mountaineers also closed 2024-25 at 13-5 in Big 12 play, slotting behind only TCU, Baylor, Oklahoma State and Kansas State in the final conference standings.

The now-former Badger joins the perennial Big 12 contender with two years of eligibility remaining.

Wisconsin has seen nearly its entire roster depart via the transfer portal or graduation after finishing the 2024-25 season 13-17 overall and 4-14 in Big Ten play. Head coach Marisa Moseley announced her resignation after the season’s conclusion.

The program has since hired former Missouri head coach Robin Pingeton to take over at the helm. She is faced with a top-down roster rebuild, looking to turn around a program that hasn’t registered a winning season since 2010-11. Pingeton began Wisconsin’s incoming transfer movement with a commitment from NC State guard Laci Steele, the first addition of what guarantees to be a busy few months of roster movement.
