Heavy rain disrupts normal life in Dharmapuri; schools to remain closed on October 23

Heavy rain that pounded Dharmapuri district throughout on Wednesday (October 22, 2025), inundated houses in a few areas. In view of rain, schools will remain closed on Thursday (October 23, 2025).

The district has been receiving sporadic rain since Monday night (October 20, 2025), with heavy rain in certain parts. On Wednesday, Harur recorded a rainfall of 38.4 mm, followed by Paapireddipatti – 37mm. The continuing rain affected normalcy in Dharmapuri, leaving roads deserted and commuters stranded.

At Illakiyampatti, heavy rain led to inundation in some habitations leaving residents stranded in knee-deep waters. However, the district administration swung into action and cleared up blockages in the drainage channels in the affected parts of Dharmapuri town.

Nallampalli, Palacode, Dharmapuri and Pennagaram received continuous downpour since 6 a.m. on Wednesday, while schools and colleges functioned. However, during the day, after the Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for the district, Collector R. Sadheesh directed schools to close an hour early in order for students to return home.

Earlier, the Collector inspected the drainage channel at Raman Nagar, where dredging works were being carried out to remove encroachments. Similarly, water hyacinths were also removed at Pidamaneri lake.

The Collector also inspected the district control room, and reviewed the actions taken on the various complaints received from the public. Public may contact the district control room on the toll free number 1077, 04342-231077; 04342-231500; 230067.

Further, the Collector has issued an advisory to the public to refrain from venturing into water bodies. According to the administration, over 50% of the lakes have reached full capacity and the remaining water bodies are close to reaching the same. In view of the onset of northeast monsoon, public are cautioned against taking livestock into waterbodies.

The inflow into Hogenakkal fell to 28,000 cusecs on Wednesday, after seeing a surge in inflow on Tuesday.
