The State government has focused its attention on expanding the Indiramma Indlu, weaker section housing scheme, to urban areas.
The decision comes in the backdrop of brisk progress being made in the construction of Indiramma Indlu in the rural areas. The government on Wednesday issued detailed guidelines for the construction of houses in the urban areas giving a facelift to the urban slums.
Eligible beneficiaries living in own plots with nominal areas can opt for construction of G+1 houses under the scheme. Keeping in view the fact that a majority of urban poor own plots less than 60 sq.yds, the government relaxed guidelines allowing them to construct own houses with RCC roofs with payment of ₹5 lakh in four installments based on the stages of construction.
Beneficiaries could take up construction on plinth area of 30 sq.mts with 200 sq.ft room each in the ground and first floors. The housing units should take up construction of two rooms of 96 fq.ft and 70 sw.ft along with a kitchen which should be at least 35.5 sq.ft. The housing units should be mandatorily equipped with bathroom and toilet.
Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy said the decision to relax the guidelines was taken to ensure that the poor realised their dream of owning a house. He said the relaxation would enable the urban poor living under temporary sheds and other makeshift arrangements to construct their own houses.
Reviewing the progress of Indiramma Indlu with senior officials, he said the decision followed a detailed study on the need to extend the benefit of Indiramma Indlu to the urban poor. The guidelines were accordingly relaxed enabling people sustaining with minimum facilities to construct their own dwellings.
He exhorted the officials to focus attention on the construction of houses in urban areas as it was a challenging task as compared with the implementation of Indiramma Indlu scheme in the rural areas.
