Action needed

The electric meters and switches of streetlights are installed at lower levels in most electric poles. Many of them remain open, providing easy access to the children. The government should take necessary measures to prevent any accidents caused by exposed meter boxes and switches on electric poles.

Parking chaos

Swamy Nellaiappar temple zone in Tirunelveli is in a dire need of a facelift as visitors are struggling with poor parking facilities, with no levelling and no signboards. The recent rainy days have made things worse, causing water logging and turning the ground slushy. To add to the inconvenience, parking receipts are issued only when vehicles are taken out from the lot.

The area should be immediately equipped with necessary sign boards, to enable hassle free parking. Improved lighting is also essential for safety and security. The concerned authorities must take action, making the area clean and safe and user friendly, allowing even visitors from other states to access facilities with ease.

Flooded areas

Tirunelveli is currently experiencing the northeast monsoon and areas such as the Thiruvananthapuram road and the roads around Tirunelveli junction bus stand are flooded. It is because of the never silted drainage canals, despite the city facing the same ordeal last year. As the city represents itself as a Smart city, the question remains when will it truly become one? Tirunelveli district collector must intervene and urge the corporation authorities to take action on war footing before the peak of monsoon season.

Frequent shut-downs

Eruvadi, a special grade panchayat of Tirunelveli district is currently facing frequent power failures, with even light showers adding to the problem. The electricity board in Eruvadi is urged to take immediate action to resolve the issue.

Unsafe strips

Rumble strips in roads are designed as safety features, providing audible feedback to drivers through vibrations and noise, which prompts them to reduce their speed and regain their attention. However, passengers in buses experience jotting movements when these vehicles encounter bumps. The situation is even more challenging for patients in ambulances. Last week, a senior citizen lost his life in an accident involving newly installed rumble strips in Thoothukudi-Tiruchendur road.

The Indian Road Congress specifies that rumble strips should be used only on minor roads, not on national highways and there are specific guidelines for their installation.

The officials of highways department, district administration, and RTO must inspect these installations and direct for the removal shortly.
