The Forest Department has placed camera traps in a farm at Ettimadai in Coimbatore district after a leopard preyed on a pet dog in the early hours of Wednesday (October 22, 2025).

Officials from the Department said a dog that belonged to J. Harikumar of Ettimadai was killed by a leopard that strayed into the human habitation from the nearby reserve forest areas of Madukkarai range, Coimbatore Forest Division.

Visuals from a surveillance camera showed a leopard entering the farm around 1.30 a.m. on Wednesday and returning with its kill, the pet dog, within seconds.

Madukkarai Forest Range Officer R. Arun Kumar said the Forest Department staff visited the farm on Wednesday morning after being alerted by the farm’s owner. They found the remains of the dog around 150 away from his house.

Based on the instructions of District Forest Officer N. Jayaraj, two pairs of camera traps were installed at the farm by Wednesday evening to monitor the movement of the carnivore for further action.
