Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) Commissioner Ketan Garg said that the civic body is using advanced technology to curb littering at public places, roads, footpaths, and drains.
He said that drones and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology are being deployed to monitor public spaces, and to identify individuals or traders failing to use dustbins. He added that strict action would be taken against offenders. Measures include imposing heavy fines, cancellation of trade licences, and other enforcement measures.
Mr. Garg said that the data received daily through drone cameras across the city is analysed at the Command Operations Centre (COC) using AI tools. Based on this analysis the GVMC Sanitation & Health Enforcement (SHE) teams are taking necessary action against violators and preparing teams to levy fines.
“On the night of October 22, drones and AI-based surveillance was carried out in Zone-4 limits, from Poorna Market to Kanaka Mahalakshmi Temple Junction. The inspection revealed large quantities of garbage along the footpaths and roads, particularly from Town Kotha Road to Kanaka Mahalakshmi Temple,” he said, adding that most shopkeepers in the stretch were not using dustbins.”
The Commissioner emphasised that the cooperation from traders and citizens is essential to maintaining city cleanliness. Every trader and resident must compulsorily use dustbins and hand over their waste to the designated collection vehicles to ensure their surroundings are clean and hygienic.
