With the aim of creating a Statewide public toilet network, the Suchitwa Mission has launched the KLOO mobile application, an innovative platform developed by Frugal Scientific, a start-up.
KLOO plans to utilise existing clean and accessible facilities in private establishments such as hotels and restaurants, eliminating the need for new construction.
The app, whose name is a portmanteau of ‘Kerala’ and ‘loo,’ connects citizens with the nearest usable toilet, providing real-time information, including location, operating hours, and crucial cleanliness ratings given by other users. KLOO functions by onboarding private establishments that register their facilities. Those registering their facilities should specify key details such as whether the toilets are open to all or to customers only, operating hours and accessibility features, including gender availability and special facilities such as differently abled-friendly.
Upon successful verification by the local body or Suchitwa Mission, the establishment receives a KLOO partner sticker or signage, recognising their commitment to the Clean Kerala initiative. Continuous user feedback and ratings are keys to maintain high sanitation standards, said a statement here on Thursday.
Businesses to benefit
Hotels and restaurants are poised to gain significant business advantages from this platform. Opening restrooms increases footfall of travellers, delivery personnel, and tourists. Many users often make a purchase after using the facilities, leading to indirect revenue. By offering clean toilets, KLOO partners become preferred pit stops for domestic and international travellers, aligning with the highly valued ‘Clean Kerala’ vision.
The establishments can join the network by registering via the KLOO Partner Portal or the Suchitwa Mission office. The KLOO app is as a smart, inclusive, and sustainable sanitation model that utilises private infrastructure to meet a public need, demonstrating a forward-looking approach to urban sanitation management in Kerala, said the statement.
