Kanniyakumari district has been experiencing widespread rainfall since the late hours of Thursday, which continued throughout Friday. Due to this, the inflow into Pechiparai dam has increased. To ensure the safety of dams an initial discharge of 500 cusecs will be released from Pechiparai dam at 7 a.m. on Saturday (October 25).
The water will flow through Kaliyal, Thirparappu, Moovatrumugam, Kuzhithurai and Erayumanthurai before finally merging at the Thengapatinam sea. The residents living along the banks of Kodhaiyar-Thamirabharani river are advised to exercise caution.
As of Friday, the water level in the Pechiparai dam stood at 42.3 feet, against its full capacity 48 feet with an inflow of 1,286 cusecs and discharge of 492 cusecs. Water level in Perunchani dam stood at 66.81 feet, while the total capacity of the dam is 77 feet with an inflow of 1,597 cusecs with no discharge.
Several places in the district have been witnessing persistent wet weather. Following the heavy wind and rainfall across the district in the early hours of Friday, the students and parents anticipated a rain holiday, however the district administration did not declare a holiday.
Kanniyakumar Collector R. Alagumeena inspected the northeast monsoon preparations at Thovalai area. She directed the officials to expedite necessary action in the areas prone to water logging.
Ms. Alagumeena also inspected the direct paddy procurement centre at Chenbagaramanputhoor and Vadasery areas. The department officials were instructed to clean the large quantity of paddy and store them in the warehouse.
The rainfall recorded in the district ending at 6 a.m. on Friday was as follows: Kottaram 49.4, Nagercoil 40.6, Aralvaimozhi 25, Balamore 87.4, Thuckalay 30, Colachel 21, Chittar I 72.8, Pechiparai 72.4, Perunchani 69.4, Puthen dam 68.6 and Thirparappau recorded 58.4 mm rainfall.
