Agriculture Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam said on Friday that crop loss to the tune of 33 % or above alone would qualify for compensation.
He told the media at Kizhakovilpathu in Ammapettai village panchayat in Thanjvur district that 2,071 hectares of land on which kuruvai crop was raised had been flooded in recent rains. Out of this, standing crop was affected on about 636 hectares.
Regarding samba, of the 766 hectares on which samba had been cultivated, crop on 16 hectares had been damaged. The officials were enumerating the fields where the crop loss was 33% or more, he said.
The Minister urged farmers, who had taken up samba/thaladi cultivation, to insure their crop by remitting a premium of ₹564 per acre on or before November 15 to avail a maximum compensation of ₹37,600 per acre.
